The Ontopia Knowledge Suite (OKS), including the Ontopia Topic Map Engine, was open sourced by Bouvet in April 2009. It was made available by SVN on 16 June 2009. It probably can be considered the pre-eminent open source topic maps engine.

Mappa is a Topic Maps engine that is written in Python. Is it compatible to the Topic Maps Data Model and provides different backends. Some backends are also usable in a Jython environment. The API is Pythonic and enables the developer to create and manipulate topic maps easily. Additionally, Mappa provides the import and export of different Topic Maps syntaxes (i.e. XTM)

JSON Topic Maps (JTM) is a Topic Maps notation that is particular useful in a JavaScript environment (e.g. Browser). It is meant for machine exchange of topic maps, not for authoring. It is based on the TMDM and stands next to XTM 2.0 on the shelf of notations.

sharptm is a core Topic Maps engine written in .NET . To introduce the Topic Maps technology to the .NET world, the goal of this project is a small and extensible Topic Maps engine based on the TMAPI.Net project that implements the TMAPI 2.0 interfaces and unit test. Another objective is compatibility with a wide range of platforms like .NET 2.0+, Mono, .NET Compact Framework and Silverlight. That’s why the resulting engine should be small and lightweight.

FreeTM is a Free Topic Map Editor, based on GWTM (Topic Maps for GWT) library, that uses tinyTIM library for handling and storing Topic Maps on the server. FreeTM is developed by the Departments of Electronics, TEI Thessalonikis, Greece and it is free to be used for Topic Maps editing.

Linear Topic Map notation is a simple textual format for writing topic maps. Just like the XML exchange format it represents the constructs in the topic map standard as text, but unlike the XML format it is compact and simple. The notation can be written in any text editor and processed by topic map software that supports it, or converted into the XML format supported by such software.

QuaaxTM is a small Topic Maps engine, an implementation of the core interfaces of PHPTMAPI. PHPTMAPI is based on the TMAPI specification and provides a standardized API for PHP 5 to access and process data held in a topic map. QuaaxTM uses MySQL with InnoDB as storage engine and therefore benefits from transaction support and referential integrity.
